With gracious words and sweet;
A well of strife thou wast for long,
To bitterness wast fleet,
But now thy God thy streams amends
And healing to thy fountains sends.
Rise up, O tongue of fire,
My soul with sin is dark;
God doth thy melody inspire,
Now lend thy little spark.
Thou canst a matter great ignite
So bring thy Saviour's praise to light!
Come forth, my lifeless tongue
Thy King demands my praise;
His glories have not all been sung
Who holdeth endless days.
Awake! be silent nevermore,
But ceaselessly thy God adore!
—Zachary Pletan, on James 3:2–12
Thank you for posting this. A beautiful hymn indeed (smacks of Newton, I think). But when you say "lengthened version of FESTAL SONG," do you mean that you have written one yourself? I could only find the version with four stanzas on Hymnary (the first website that popped up when I googled the tune).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I tacked on the ending. It might be a little hacky but I'm pretty sure I've had this in mind for a year and a half.

Actually, that's not all that bad. You might need to modify the original melody a little to make it segueway into your addition (if you ever harmonized it, the last chords in the fourth line should not be pushing towards the tonic, or one, chord). You certainly echoed the rise and fall of the original - I like that!
DeleteThat's what I had, but if others (hint hint) want to try anything they're more than welcome to it.
DeleteHint taken. I don't think I'm exactly qualified to address the changes I suggested exactly... but let me mull over it for a while.
DeleteHey, are we ever going to get more hymns? I've really been enjoying the ones you wrote!
ReplyDeleteEventually, I'm sure :)
